Adoption support and CAMHS workshop 3 Friday 17 May 2024

Course date: Friday, May 17, 2024

AEM adoption support have joined up with Nottinghamshire CAMHS to support adoptive parents to revisit the impact of developmental trauma on their child and their emotional wellbeing.

These workshops aim to support adoptive parents with thinking about their concerns in relation to their child’s current presentation using a trauma informed approach and are available to all adoptive parents in the AEM region.

All adoptive parents attending workshops 2 and 3 will require a solid understanding of developmental trauma. If adoptive parents have already attended other courses relating to this workshops 2 and 3 can be accessed straight away. If adoptive parents haven’t attended other courses or wish to refresh their knowledge, workshop 1 will help attendees get more out of workshops 2 and 3.

Workshop 3 will explore self-harming behaviours and how a child can be supported through these behaviours.

We recognise that seeing a child harm themselves can be distressing and difficult to understand. Adoptive parents may feel unable to support them, or unsure how best to support them whilst wanting to understand these behaviours.

This workshop is aimed at:

  • Demystifying some of the myths around self-harm.
  • Exploring what is meant by self-harm.
  • Considering the reasons a child may feel the need to harm themselves, and how this harm may present.
  • Exploring alternate ways to manage a child's thoughts and feelings that may reduce self-harm to support their wellbeing but also looking at adoptive parents' own wellbeing.

There will be plenty of time for informal discussions and reflections within the timings of all three workshops.

Workshop 3 will be taking place on Friday 17 May 2024 from 10am - 1pm. To book a place and find out more information about the venue please email: AdoptionEvents@adoptioneastmidlands.nottscc.gov.uk.
